Still with me? Awesome. So, Sony has a new model of the PSP for Europe that makes a lot of sense: it’s €99/£89 ($130), and at that price, it’s something you could pick up on an impulse when you go to the shops to buy some milk.
Except for the fact it doesn’t have Wi-Fi. Meaning this will mostly be used for singleplayer gaming only. That may be a problem for those of us old enough to drink and who like complaining about things anonymously on internet sites, but for teenagers and kids, Sony thinks it should be fine.
“You will see the audience skew younger,” Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s Jim Ryan told website MCV. “At €99/£89 it will make a great Christmas gift. It’s a device to play UMD games. It’s all for the audience. If we are going to take PSP very young — teens and much younger — they are happy to just play the game. If taking Wi-Fi out is the price to pay, we’re happy to. The €99 price tag is a real barrier that we’ve got under which will help us lift off.”

The PS2 hung around for 3-4 years longer than it should have because of moves like this. Be a great achievement for Sony if the PSP could do the same, stick it out until 2014, the handheld’s 10th anniversary.

ew iPad pre-orders sold out, says Apple

Apple has said that new iPad stock it allocated for pre-orders has sold out entirely, amid "off the charts" demand for the third generation of the tablet computer.

Pre-orders for the new iPad, featuring a Retina display, zippier A5X processor and 4G connectivity, were launched immediately after the product was announced by Apple last Wednesday.

The California technology giant had promised to ship the first new iPad orders on March 16, but anyone now pre-ordering the device will have to wait until March 19.

According to USA Today, the shipping delays affect all models and price levels, and there is now a limit of just two new iPads per customer for any pre-orders.

"Customer response to the new iPad has been off the charts and the quantity available for pre-order has been purchased," Apple said in a statement. "Customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date."

Researchers are developing a revolutionary new technology that puts the mobile phone on the palm of your hand — literally. Using a special camera that combines high-speed vision and two rotational mirrors, Masatoshi Ishikawa and colleagues at the University of Tokyo have found a way to project a device's display or keyboard onto the palm or any other surface, so that one can operate it remotely at home or office.

The system can detect the movement of a 3D object every two milliseconds, Ishikawa said. The high-speed vision allows the programme to track moving objects, so that users would be free to walk with the phone image on their palm, without the display ever shifting, ABC News reported.

The computer system beams ultrasonic wave emitters, so users actually feels the keyboard pressing against their skin, without anything in their hand. The sensation is simiar to holding a 3 gramme object. "You won't need a keyboard , you won't need to carry a smartphone, or a computer. You can make a call without anything," Ishikawa said.
Ishikawa expects the technology to turn into a reality in a year or two.
The 'palm phone' is the latest in a string of systems that Ishikawa has developed using high-speed vision technology. Last year, the Japanese researcher unveiled a robotic hand designed to win the game rock-paper-scissors 100% of the time.

While tremendous advances are being made in smartphone hardware, each new technology is still at the mercy of the phone's battery, a power source that can be maddeningly inefficient.

Batteries aren't going away any time soon, but a team of researchers at Massachusetts-based startup Eta Devices have reportedly found a way to reduce battery consumption by half.

One of the most wasteful power drains on a smartphone battery is the power amplifier, a chip used to convert electricity into radio signals and maintain handsets' connection to a wireless network.

Power amplifiers in smartphones waste approximately 65 percent of handsets' power and are what cause a smartphone to heat up when streaming video or uploading large files.

Eta Devices has redesigned the power amplifier using a technology called asymmetric multilevel outphasing.
The technology intelligently chooses the minimum voltage necessary to maintain a connection, updating as often as 20 million times per second to ensure the highest efficiency.
Battery blues

Eta Devices is currently developing its power amplifier technology for cellular base stations, which suffer similar power inefficiency problems, with the new chips getting put to use starting in 2013.
However, the startup firm has aspirations of creating a single power amplifier chip to revolutionize energy efficiency on smartphones.
With double the efficiency in the new power amplifiers, smartphone batteries would burn out half as fast.
What's more, it would also facilitate advances to make greater strides in CPU and display technology that would be impractical with the energy efficiency level of current devices.
After all, what good is any new hot piece of mobile tech if it needs to be tethered to an outlet after an hour?

Of the expected growth, the report’s author Nitin Bhas said: “With consumers embracing new technologies and form factors, wearable devices ranging from fitness accessories to heads-up displays will be more prevalent in the consumer market. The iPhone 6 will land early next year, and have a 4.8-inch screen, according to analyst Glen Yeung at Citi Research, CNET reports.

But Yeung didn't stop there. He also mused on the iPad Mini Retina, the iPhone 5S, and the next full-size iPad.

If the iPhone 6 does have a 4.8-inch screen, it'd be almost the same size as the 5-inchSamsung Galaxy S4. The iPhone 5 is 4 inches, which is pretty puny by today's standards. TheGalaxy S4 Mini is 4.3 inches, and yet that's got Mini in the name.

The much-rumoured iPhone 5S "has been delayed by two to four weeks," according to Yeung and Citi Research's "field work in the hardware supply chain". Yeung isn't writing off a September launch for the 5S, but notes "volumes in September may consequently be challenged".

Apple will launch two new versions of iPad Mini, too, he reckons. One will be a fair bit cheaper than the current model, to compete with the likes of the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire. The other will have a 2,048x1,536-pixel Retina display.

The next full-size iPad will be slimmer and lighter than the current model, according to Yeung. Again, a September launch is on the cards, he reckons.

So what of WWDC next week? Yeung reckons the only hardware we'll see will be new MacBooks. Apple will launch its long-rumoured music streaming service though, known as iRadio. He also thinks Apple will open up its API to developers, letting them develop for iCloud, Maps, and Siri.
